MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK
NEW YORK, NEW MUSIC EXHIBITION
On View NOW - September 18 I 1220 Fifth Ave at 104th St.

During the early 1980s, New York experienced a community-driven musical renaissance. The result was an era of creativity and genre-defying performance that stands as one of the most influential in musical and cultural history. A wide range of music, from punk to pop to hip-hop to salsa to jazz, mixed in a dynamic arts scene that stretched across clubs and bars, theaters, parks, and art spaces. Together, they provided fertile ground for a musical revolution—one that continues to influence pop culture to this day. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of MTV, New York, New Music: 1980–1986 highlights diverse musical artists—from Run DMC to the Talking Heads, from Madonna to John Zorn—as a lens to explore the broader music and cultural scene, including the innovative media outlets, venues, record labels, fashion and visual arts centered in New York City in these years.

STREET TREE CARE AT SUFFOLK & HOUSTON
Friday, August 26 I 10:30AM-12:30PM
Southwest Corner of Suffolk and Houston

Volunteer to care for New York City street trees by applying locally produced compost! Volunteers will help remove weeds and litter as well as apply compost made from NYC food scraps to street tree beds.
Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Gloves, tools and materials will be provided. Street tree care events serve to both create awareness about NYC's urban ecology and educate residents on the multitude of benefits healthy trees provide our neighborhoods. The idea is for the food scraps to be repurposed and redistributed back to the community as compost through greening projects. Street tree care events are one of many ways we accomplish this mission and your participation helps to further this cause.

This month's NYAM Around the Table discussion will focus on promoting civic health. With the recent reversal of women’s healthcare rights, it is important to understand how civic health can affect your life and what you can do about it.
While an individual’s physical health can affect their ability to do everyday things, civic health affects communities and hinders progress towards improved social outcomes such as equitable access to quality healthcare, education, and job opportunities. This program will cover the key indicators of civic health, how your participation can and will make a difference, and the important role medical professionals can play in promoting positive civic health.
