Community Info and Resources

NYC Childcare Tax Relief Programs: Mayor Adams announced new childcare tax credits. View the Office of the Mayor’s Childcare Plan for more information.

Food Service Businesses: NYC Commercial Organics Requirements began on July 31. By law, staff-handled organic waste must be source separated for collection. For more information, visit here.

The Department of Environmental Protection sent out a notice on January 30 about their water bill Amnesty Program for all customers that have fallen behind on their payments. If you owe water and wastewater charges, you may be eligible. This is a one-time-only program that will run for 90 days and is available for all customers regardless of tax class or amount of water debt.

Hostelling International

HI New York City is welcoming young backpackers back to its Upper West Side hostel as international travelers return to our city. The Hostel is re-building its volunteer base, offering these two opportunities to New Yorkers who would like to share their knowledge of our city. Tours/Outings: 
Do you enjoy interacting with people from different countries and cultures? Are you interested in sharing your knowledge about NYC history and the history of our many communities? HI NYC is seeking volunteers to create and lead tours/outing for hostel guests. These tours/outings allow guests to explore New York City through the eyes of a local. Hostel tour volunteers can curate a custom tour or outing based on an area of expertise whether it be a neighborhood, type of food, art, etc. This is a great opportunity to meet and engage with people from around the world!

Information Desk: 
Are you passionate about New York City? Do you like interacting with people from all over the world? Hostel volunteers will support our HI NYC’s information desk at its historic location at 891 Amsterdam Avenue at 103 Street. You will help enrich the hostel experience by sharing recommendations, providing directions, and helping guests explore New York!  There are AM and PM information desk volunteer shifts available Monday-Sunday.

VOLUNTEER WITH FRIENDS

Help beautify the Park every Second Saturday of the month, March – November. Volunteers collect trash, weeds, plant, paint, mulch, and rake. Supplies, gloves, and safety guidelines are provided.

Undesign the Redline @ Barnard is an interactive exhibition combining history, art, and storytelling with community outreach and collaboration in order to reckon with systemic racism by examining the legacy of redlining in the neighborhoods surrounding Barnard College and Columbia University.

Performers - Student Composers from Bloomingdale's A4TY Student Composing Project

For 19 years Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) has maintained a special focus on introducing students (ages 7-18) to composition through their A4TY (Album for the Young) Student Composing Program. The March 4th concert will feature 20 student compositions, ranging from solo works for piano, to works for small chamber ensembles of mixed strings, percussion and winds. The concert will also feature the premiere of a new commissioned work for violin, piano, flute and congas by composer, Mariel Mayz.

The Clothing Closet distributes emergency clothing through the Nutrition, Health, and Clothing Center, and also provides workplace-appropriate clothing for individuals returning to the workforce. Persons seeking professional clothing must have a referral from an agency familiar with their employment search. Clothing distribution is free of charge and based on availability, and clients can obtain clothing once per month. Identification is required. The Clothing Closet accepts donations of gently-used, freshly-laundered clothing. Donations can be dropped off at the Cathedral from Monday-Friday, 9AM-4PM
